Recognizing that local communities are struggling to maintain staffing levels and provide essential services, Rep. George Miller of California introduced legislation Friday designed to help state and local governments retain and rehire workers. His proposal provides more than $37 billion for local governments, and an additional $24 billion for states to pay teachers, policemen and firefighters.
President Obama is expected to unveil a job creation plan next month and supporters of the Miller bill would like to see investments in state and local jobs included in such a package. Rep. Miller argues that not only are local government workers vital for providing valuable community services, but keeping them employed will be essential if the country hopes to improve an unemployment rate that is currently above 9 percent.
H.R. 2828, the Local Jobs for America Act, will need the support of Members of Congress throughout the country in order to gain momentum and it is important that you personally contact them to let them know the impact that this legislation could have on our communities. To learn more about the allowable uses for this future funding source or for information on how to contact your Congressional delegation to voice your support and request that they cosponsor this bill, please contact TFG Partner Amanda Wood at 202-331-8500.
