Hi, Blog Readers. Doubtless you have heard by now that the Senate passed its version of the Transportation Reauthorization bill this week. That’s the good news. The bad news is that the House has no intention of taking up its bill before the current extension of the Highway Trust Fund expires on March 31. Therefore, it is very likely that we will see a 9th extension proposed, although the length of this extension is the big question mark. Senate Environment and Public Works Committee Chair Boxer is vehemently opposed to another extension, preferring that the House simply pass the Senate version of the bill, but this seems very unlikely. Another short term extension of perhaps 3 months may be what happens. The House is still wrangling over what bill will make it to the House floor. Will it be Chairman Mica’s 5-year bill or will it be a shorter duration bill as hinted by Speaker Boehner? Stay tuned.
