Over 20,000 official registrants and an estimated 30,000 activists and stakeholders are in Washington this week for the 2012 International AIDS Conference. This marks the first time since 1990 that the conference has been held in the United States. The conference theme "Turning the Tide" seeks to take advantage of scientific and medical gains in the battle against HIV and AIDS. “It’s a special moment,” Jonathan Mermin, CDC director of HIV/AIDS prevention, said last week. While the scientific community is largely sponsoring the gathering, the Global Village is the hub of activity for practioners, community development organizations, faith-based groups, and people living with HIV.
I'm attending and will continue to report from the conference during the week. If you've travelled to DC for the conference, send me a note at [email protected] so that we can connect.
