Women in DC are reading in the news allegations by the Human Rights Watch that DC police shoved scores of sexual-assault cases aside without investigating or filing proper reports, coerced victims into not filing reports, and demeaned others with insensitive comments about their sexual practices. While the DC Police Chief is objecting to the findings and working to locate the missing or never investigated cases, the DC City Council is holding hearings.
Meanwhile, thousands of women working on Capitol Hill are watching the Senate debate the Violence Against Women Act as House leadership decides whether they are going to be able to pass a bill. We all want to be safe when we leave work and go home at night. We all want the local rape crisis centers and domestic violence hotlines and resources to be there if we or a friend or family member needs them. Our communities will be safer with the resources and programs provided by this legislation.
Passage is long overdue. Today, the Senate began consideration of S. 47 and advocates and survivors will have to wait until Monday, Feb. 11, for final Senate votes on the pending amendments. Law enforcement and advocates need these resources to assist survivors and prevent domestic violence and sexual assault.
