Survivors, law enforcement and advocates heard President Obama call for Congressional action to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) during the State of the Union speech to the nation. Today the Senate approved its bill with a strong 78 votes. It is now up to the House. The bill includes a number of new measures to support a stronger criminal justice response to rape, plus housing protections for the first time ever. It includes both service and prevention programs to more effectively address crimes of sexual violence and domestic violence.
The State of the Union speech sets the White House agenda for the year. Passing VAWA is a priority for the nation. Let's hope the House of Representatives will act soon.
