It is with great pride and privilege that I report that the Mayor of my hometown of Charlotte, North Carolina, has been selected by President Obama to be the next Secretary of Transportation. Anthony Foxx, 42 today, has been slated as a rising star in the Democratic Party – he worked tirelessly to bring the 2012 Democratic Convention to Charlotte. In 2009, Foxx was the first Democrat elected to the Charlotte Mayor’s office in 22 years, and he is the second African American mayor of the Queen City. During his tenure as Mayor, Foxx has overseen construction of a light rail system, a third runway at Charlotte Douglass International Airport, and a popular streetcar project. During President Obama’s announcement yesterday, Mayor Foxx highlighted his commitment to bipartisanship, stating “[t]here is no such thing as a Democratic or a Republican road, bridge, port, airfield or rail station. We must work together, across party lines, to enhance this nation’s infrastructure.” Foxx is not only an effective leader, but I can attest, a wonderful person. Local governments should join me in celebrating his new post. He understands you and your needs and will no doubt be another advocate for you in Washington.
